It's art, Jim, but not as we know it Art is in the eye of the beholder. Take the Flash logo above, for instance; personally I think that it's a grotesque and over-simplistic attempt that could have been put together by a twelve - year old. The rest of my staff think it's a really groovy and up - to - the - minute minimalist pastiche; or at least they did do, until I let it be known, somewhat unsubtly, that yes it was put together by a 12-year old, my young daughter in fact, who only picked up the elements of Flash a couple of months ago. If she's been able to pickle it in formaldehyde I swear that they would still have hailed her as the next Michelangelo. That set me to thinking though. What actually is art, and what is the point of it? Can we compare the daubings of a monkey with a Dutch Old Master, a caveman's wall paintings with a Canaletto? Yes I think we can because they can all excite our imagination in a different way and that is the whole point of art in my humble opinion. If I had a choice between watching the Ring Cycle at Beyreuth, glorifying in the grandeur of St Mark's Square in Venice or deciphering some old Greek texts scratched onto a fragment of a plate, I'd pick the plate every day because that would instantly carry me back over 2000 years and bring before me of a whole host of ancient heroes, magnificent achievements, terrifying and all-powerful Gods. And Heck I can fly to Italy or listen to Wagner anytime. Want to talk about art or commission something a little unusual? Email me on dave2 at fauver.net or ring me on 08557 3378895. And no, my daughter will NOT be designing it, not for a few more years anyhow. Copyright fauver.net 2008
